About the Bonneville Cycling Club
We are a fun group that loves to ride!
The Bonnneville Cycling Club (BCC) provides opportunities for every cyclist's interest from recreation, fitness, touring, commuting, to just plain fun. We also focus on bicycle advocacy, safety and a member's first philosophy. Membership is open to anyone who is willing to support the objectives stated, pays dues and abides by the rules set forth in the By-Laws.
Why join the BCC?
Road and mountain biking with our club is not only great exercise, but fun! We offer non-intimidating, safe, social rides and advocate for safety and cycling awareness. For $25, you gain membership to the club for one year. Our club calendar provides opportunity for every level of cyclist and our rides have descriptions/guidelines so you can choose which best suit your needs. Rides led by our volunteer members are always free.Check out the BCC website, including our ride calendar, here!
Members receive discounted entry fees for Little Red Riding Hood and ULCER. Both are sponsored by the BCC. BCC members also receive 15% discounts on bike accessories at Cottonwood Cyclery, Bingham's Cyclery (all locations), and Rack'n'Road (State Street).
The BCC also allows members to participate in our Commuter Challenge. Keep track of your commuter miles and do your part to help eliminate carbon emissions.
Cycling in a group is more safe than riding alone! More riders means more visibility, and the less likely you are to be hit by a vehicle. We observe all traffic laws, including coming to a full stop at stop signs. Our ride leaders would be happy to answer any safety related questions you may have on our rides.
On Monday nights throughout the summer, our League of American Bicyclist Certified Instructors teach free classes, on a variety of cycling related topics. These classes are followed by a short ride.
Please remember that all riders must wear a helmet to participate in any club ride and iPods are not permitted for the safety of the individual, as well as the group.
Some Frequently Asked Questions
What does the BCC do and what does it stand for?
BCC sponsors mileage challenges for its members with awards given at our year-end banquet that include the Social Series, Metric and SuperSeries events that are all free throughout the year. New members can qualify for the "100", the top 100 riders of the year after completing their first 10 club rides or 500 miles. All mileage accrued on club rides is tracked by ourStatistician to keep track of all members' progress throughout the year which is, in part, the basis of our awards.
Also, as a League of American Bicyclists Club of the Year for 2011, we sponsor a Commuter Challenge for our members to track their bicycling commuting miles as a way to promote cleaner air.
BCC provides educational events for beginning cyclists throughout the season and provides a ride calendar of more than 500 rides per year to permit cyclists to improve their skills through literally dozens of choices per week.
Bonneville is the organizer of Little Red and ULCER rides and has done this for more than 25 years.
Proceeds from both events go to charitable causes, Little Red for Cancer research at the University of Utah Genetics Research Lab, and previously to Huntsman Cancer Institute.
ULCER has raised funds for the Olympic Park Youth Sports Program for the past 2 years and this year will add BikeUtah as a recipient.
Utah has Share the Road license plates, thanks in a big part to BCC's ability to donate $10,000 to finance the first run of the plates as required by Utah law several years ago.
Bonneville Cycling Club is active in advocacy efforts to keep Utah roads open to bicycle use as a member of BikeUtah and the SLC Mayor's Bike committee.
BCC also provides Ride Marshals to the Harmon's MS ride serving as a paying sponsor for that event, as well as for the Tour de Cure for diabetes.
Do I have to be a member to ride on one of your rides?
No, it is not mandatory that you be a member to join our rides. However, we do encourage you to join after you have tried out our club rides a few times.
I'm not in shape. What rides should I do?
Will I fit in with the Club?
We have a number of rides suited for those who are just beginning or getting back into shape. We rate our rides on a level from A-D, according to your average speed, "A" being the fastest and "D" the slowest, social paced rides. You can find the ratings on the ride calendar with a description of the terrain. If you have any questions, it's best to contact the ride leader beforehand.
How do I join the BCC?
There are 2 ways to join - online and by mail.
