Utah's Bicycle Laws

A Summary of Utah's Bicycle Laws
Know the Laws - Obey the Rules

 Bicyclists are subject to all the rights and responsibilities applicable to the operator of any other
vehicle, including obeying all traffic control signals (stops signs and traffic lights)

 Motor vehicle operators may not knowingly, intentionally, or recklessly operate a motor vehicle
within three feet of a moving bicycle, unless the driver operates the vehicle within a reasonable
and safe distance of the bicycle.

 Bicyclists must ride with the flow of traffic as near as practicable to the right-hand edge of the
roadway except: to pass; make a left turn; go straight past a right-turn only lane; to avoid unsafe
conditions; and when the lane is too narrow to safely ride beside another vehicle.

Bicyclists may not ride more than two abreast and only then if it does not impede traffic.

Bicyclists must signal when turning right, left or changing lanes.

 Bicyclists approaching an intersection may turn left from the left-turn lane, or go through the
intersection, stop at the corner on the opposite side, wait for the signal to turn green, turn left, then
continue to travel with the normal flow of traffic.

 A bicyclist may not attach to moving vehicles.

 A bicycle may not carry more persons than it was designed for, except an adult may carry a child
securely attached to his/her person.

 Bicyclists must keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times and may not carry a package
or bundle that prevents the use of both hands.

 Bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians on a sidewalk or in a crosswalk, and shall
give an audible signal when overtaking a pedestrian.

 A person may not operate a bicycle upon a sidewalk or upon a crosswalk if prohibited. If not
prohibited, the bicyclist has the same rights and duties as a pedestrian.

 Every bicycle must be equipped with brakes.

 Bicyclists may park on a sidewalk or along the edge of a roadway except where prohibited, but
must not impede pedestrian or vehicle traffic or block parked vehicles.
